An associate professor within HMNTL was elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Photonics Society.

Dr. Peter Dragic leads the Fiber Optics Research & Glass Engineering Lab (F.O.R.G.E.) team. "Our current research brings materials science back into the mainstream of fiber design by engineering fibers that have the potential for disruptive influence," the team described in their website.

Dragic's research areas are focused on integrated devices and systems. "Optical fibers are ubiquitous, finding wide-reaching applications that enable the modern world," said Dragic in his research statement. "Most importantly, their remarkably low loss has facilitated long-distance telecommunications."

In addition to his research and leadership with F.O.R.G.E., Dragic has taught several courses within ECE and ENG. He has also been part of several start-up companies.

"I have a passion for teaching laboratory courses," said Dragic. "It is always deeply inspiring to watch students' reactions when they see dry lecture material come to life in their own hands."

Dragic said he was honored to be elected to the board. "I look forward to having the joy of giving back to a society that has given me so much over the years."

"These are exciting times for the Photonics Society," said IEEE Photonics Society President René-Jean Essiambre in Dragic's acceptance letter. "Our field of technology is strong despite the economy. We co-sponsor some of the largest and fastest-growing conferences in the field. Our journals are among the most respected and frequently cited."

Dragic's 3-year term will start on January 1, 2023.
