Biography

Arif Masud holds B.Sc. (Honors) in Civil Engineering (University of Engineering and Technology, Lahore, Pakistan, 1986), M.S. in Structural Engineering (Stanford University, 1987) and Ph.D. in Computational Mechanics (Stanford University, 1993). In 1986 he was awarded the Mian-Iqbal Hussain Gold Medal by the University of Engineering and Technology, Pakistan. Prior to joining the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, he served on the faculty of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) from 1994-2006, where he held joint appointments in the Department of Civil and Materials Engineering, and the Department of Bioengineering.

Professor Masud teaches graduate and undergraduate courses on nonlinear finite element methods, structural analysis, structural mechanics, and computational inelasticity. He has received several teaching recognition awards. Dr. Masud serves as an Associate Editor of the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) Journal of Engineering Mechanics (2004-2013), Associate Editor of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Journal of Applied Mechanics (2006-2013), and Associate Editor of the ASCE Journal of Nanomechanics and Micromechanics (2009-Present). He also serves on the Editorial Boards of several prestigious journals in his area of expertise, and has been a guest editor seven times for various international journals. He is co-editor of the book "The Finite Element Method: 1970s and Beyond," published in 2004.

Dr. Masud has delivered several keynote lectures at national and international conferences, and has organized more than 30 international symposia in the area of Multiscale and Stabilized Finite Element Methods. He served as Chair of the Computational Mechanics Committee of ASCE (2006-2008), and Chair of the Technical Committee on Fluid Mechanics of ASME (2007-2009). He is Member-at-Large (2010-Present) of the Executive Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division (AMD) of ASME, Member-at-Large (2012-Present) of the Executive Committee of the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM), and Charter Member of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE (2008-present). In 2002, he served as Co-chair for the 1st Sino-U.S. joint symposium on “Multiscale Analysis in Material Science & Engineering”, held in Beijing, China. In summer 2011, Dr. Masud served as the General Conference Chair for the Applied Mechanics and Materials Conference of ASME (McMAT-2011), held in Chicago, May 30 to June 1, and he will be the General Conference Chair for the US National Congress on Computational Mechanics (USNCCM-2021) scheduled to be held in Chicago in 2021.

Dr. Masud was elected a Fellow of the International Association of Computational Mechanics (IACM) in 2006, Fellow of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) in 2007, Fellow of the ASME in 2008, Fellow of the American Academy of Mechanics in 2008, Fellow of the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics in 2009, Associate Fellow of AIAA in 2016, and Fellow of EMI in 2016.

Dr. Masud’s research interests span stabilized and multiscale finite element methods for solids and fluids, fluid-structure interaction, computational micro- and nano-mechanics, and computational biomechanics.
